                       Q. What do they tell us about Nazi propaganda? How are the Nazis trying to mobilise
                         different sections of the population?
Ans. The first poster is addressed to the German farmer, while the second one is addressed to the

German worker. This tells us that through this kind of propaganda, the Nazis were trying
to win the support of the working classes.
The second poster is telling them to vote for Hitler, who has fought on the front line in the
First World War. The first poster is condemning the Capitalists and the Bolsheviks, because
they are the enemies of Nazism. By this method, the Nazis tried to mobilise different sections
of the population achieve their success.

5.ORDINARY PEOPLE AND THE CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY
l People started seeing the world through Nazi eyes and spoke their Nazi language. They

felt hatred and anger against Jews and genuinely believed Nazism would bring prosperity
                             and improve general well-being.
l Pastor Niemoeller protested an uncanny silence amongst ordinary Germans against brutal
and organised crimes committed against people in the Nazi empire.
l Charlotte Beradt’s book called ‘The Third Reich of Dreams’ describes how Jews themselves
began believing in the Nazi stereotypes about them. Jews died many deaths even before
                             they reached the gas chamber.

                                                               Box 1 (Page no. 71)
Was the lack of concern for Nazi victims only because of the Terror? No, says Lawrence Rees
who interviewed people from diverse backgrounds for his recent documentary.
‘The Nazis: A Warning from History’.
Erna Kranz, an ordinary German teenager in the1930s and a grandmother now, said to Rees:
‘1930s offered a glimmer of hope, not just for the unemployed but for everybody for we all felt
downtrodden. From my own experience I could say salaries increased and Germany seemed to
have regained its sense of purpose. I could only say for myself, I thought it was a good time.
                       I liked it.’
