19. What is hyperinflation?
Ans. Hyperinflation is a situation when prices rise phenomenally high, for example,the depleting
condition of German economy after the First World War.

20. What was Dawes plan?
Ans. The Americans intervened and bailed Germany out of the economic crisis by introducing the
plan which reworked the terms of reparation to ease the financial burden on the Germans.
21. What was the condition of the organised workers of Germany?
Ans. Only the organised workers could manage to keep their heads above water. But
unemployment weekend their bargaining power. Big business was in crisis.
22. Why was the Weimar Republic vulnerable?
Ans. Politically the republic was vulnerable and fragile because it was unstable and prone to
dictatorship.
23. What was the condition of the middle class after 1929?
Ans. Banks collapsed and businesses shut down. Workers lost their jobs and the middle classes
were threatened with destitution and the society was ruined by Nazi propaganda.

1. What did Hitler promise when he come to power?
Ans. Hitler promised to build a strong Nation, undo the injustice of the Versailles treaty and
restore the dignity of the German people. He promised employment for those looking for
work and a secure future for the youth. He promised to eliminate all foreign influences and
resist all foreign conspiracies against Germany.
2. How did the Nazi propaganda portray Hitler?
Ans. Nazi propaganda skillfully projected Hitler as a messiah. As saviour, as someone who had
arrived to deliver people from their distress. It is an image that captured the imagination
of people whose sense of dignity and pride had been shattered, and who were living in a
time of acute economic and political crisis.
3. What powers were provided to Hitler by the Enabling Act of 1933?
Ans. This act established dictatorship in Germany. It gave Hitler all powers to sideline Parliament
and rule by decree. All political parties and trade unions were banned except for the Nazi
party and its affiliates. The state established complete control over the economy, media,
army and judiciary.
4. What were the concentration camps?
Ans. Concentration camps, where people were isolated and detained without due process of law.
Typically it was surrounded by electrified wire fences.
5. How did Hjalmar Schacht recover the economy?
Ans. He aimed at full production and full employment through a state funded work creation
programme. This project produced the famous German super highways and the people’s
car the Volkswagen.
