2. Find out any case of accident or negligence from people around you, where you think
that the responsibility lay with the producer. Discuss.
Ans. My friend bought pastries from a bakery shop. Generally, these items should be consumed
within a day but shopkeeper offered a 35% discount on all bakery items after 1 day. My
friend found it an attractive offer and bought it. But after eating it her stomach got upset
and had to be treated for the same.
It’s the responsibility of the seller not to sell stale pastries. Moreover if he is selling it
on the same day (after 9 p.m or so) to clear his items, he should inform the customers.
Information about goods and services
When we buy any commodity, we find certain information mentioned on that. It is regarding
ingredients used, price, batch number, date of manufacture, expiry date and the address
of the manufacturer.
On medicines, details regarding ‘directions for proper use’ and information relating to
side effects and risks associated with usage of that medicine is given.
On garments, ‘instructions for washing’ are given.
These details are given by manufacturer because it is the right of the consumers to be
informed about the particulars of goods and services that they purchase.
In case, if the product is defective in any manner, Consumers can then complain and ask
for compensation or replacement.
For example: if a consumer buys a product, and find it as defective within the given
expiry date, consumer can ask for the replacement of that product. The manufacturer
would blame the shopkeeper and will not accept the responsibility, if the expiry period
was not printed.
If medicines are sold by someone after its expiry date, then severe action can be taken
against them.
If someone sells a good at more than the printed price on the packet, indicated by ‘MRP’
— maximum retail price, complaint against it can be filed or protest can also be done.
In fact, bargaining with the seller on MRP can be done by consumer.
To cover various services provided by the Government, the right to information has been
expanded in recent times.
In October 2005, a law was enacted by the Government of India, popularly known as
RTI (Right to Information) Act.
This law ensures its citizens all the information about the functions of government
departments.
