11. Critically examine the progress of consumer movement in India.
Ans. The consumer movement in India has undergone significant growth and transformation over the
years, leading to increased consumer awareness. The enactment of COPRA in 1986 played a
crucial role in empowering the movement. The establishment of consumer courts and consumer
groups has been a positive step forward. However, in present-day India, the consumer redressal
process remains complex, costly, and time-consuming. Engaging in legal procedures, attending
court proceedings, and hiring lawyers can be cumbersome. While there are over 700 consumer
groups in the country, only around 20-25 are well-organized and effectively functioning.
